How To Make My Iphone Headphones Louder

Apple's AirPods are a great way for any Apple fan to listen to music, videos, and pretty much anything else on their iPhone, iPad, Mac, and more.

But there might be times, for any number of reasons, when the AirPods aren't as loud as you'd like them to be.

Here are some tips on how to make your AirPods louder.

1. Change Your Device Volume

The first way to make your AirPods volume louder should be obvious—turn up the volume. There are a number of different ways to do this.

First, just select the Volume Up button on your iPhone or iPad. No matter what model you have, the hardware volume control buttons are on the side of your device.

You'll see a small pop-up on your device showing the current volume level and an icon of the AirPods. Pushing the volume buttons will adjust the sound to your liking.

While that's probably the easiest way to increase your AirPods volume, Apple provides a number of other ways to accomplish the same task.

One way is through the Control Center and its built-in volume widget. On the iPhone X or later, just swipe down from the top-right corner. On older models, swipe up from the bottom of the screen.

On the iPad, just swipe down from the top-right of the screen as well.

You'll see the volume control slider near the right portion of the screen along with an icon of the AirPods. Adjust it as necessary.

Another option to turn up the volume is with Siri. To talk to Apple's virtual assistant with the second-generation AirPods or later, just say "Hey Siri." On the first-generation model, you'll need to double-tap either earbud.

To get started, just ask what the current volume level is. You can then tell Siri to increase the volume in a number of ways, for example, "increase the volume to 75 percent," or "increase the volume by 20 percent." Simply saying "increase the volume" will raise the volume in 12 percent increments.

2. Adjust iOS Settings

Another reason your AirPods might be so quiet is due to specific settings on your iPhone or iPad.

One of the first places you should check is if the Reduce Loud Sounds feature has been switched out. It's designed to protect your hearing when using headphones.

Head to Settings > Sound & Haptics on your iPhone. Then select Headphone Safety. Make sure that Reduce Loud Sounds is toggled off.

The same setting is available on an iPad at Settings > Sounds. Select Reduce Loud Sounds.

Next, you'll want to head to Settings > Music on an iPhone. Scroll down to the Audio section. First, select EQ. If you're not familiar with an equalizer, it can hone the audio to better fit a certain type of music.

Apple includes a wide variety of different EQ choices. So you can definitely experiment with them and pick one that might provide louder audio. You can also disable the equalizer completely.

Other streaming services, like Spotify, also have separate EQ settings you can customize.

Another setting to toggle off, if you're looking to make your AirPods louder, is Sound Check. That plays all of your music and the same volume level. While the feature is designed to protect your hearing, it can make some music play quieter.

The EQ and Sound Check are only available from Apple Music or music files that have been downloaded on your iPhone.

3. Take a Closer Look at the Source Volume

If you're wondering why your AirPods are so quiet, also make sure to take a look at the source of the audio itself. For example, you might be listening to a poorly-recorded YouTube video or TikTok.

The sound from your AirPods also might be lower than you're expecting because of a poor Wi-Fi or cellular connection.

4. Clean Your AirPods

It's definitely gross to think about, but with AirPods spending time in your ears, the wireless earbuds are prone to collecting dirt, grime, and even ear wax. All of that can gather up on the AirPods and cause some sound to be blocked.

Apple recommends the best way to clean the exterior of the AirPods is with a soft, dry, and lint-free cloth that is lightly dampened with water. Make sure the AirPods are dry before putting them back in a charging case.

For the microphone and speaker meshes, use a dry cotton swab to clean those areas. Make sure to remove all of the dirt and other debris, like earwax, on the mesh surfaces.

Just to note, don't use any sharp objects or abrasive materials while cleaning the AirPods.

Basic AirPods Troubleshooting Tips

If you're still experiencing volume issues with your AirPods, it's time to go through a few basic AirPods troubleshooting tips.

First up, place the AirPods back in the case and start charging them with a Lighting cable or wirelessly. Then restart your iPhone, iPad, or other device.

Another quick and easy way to get AirPods back to working is a soft reset. To do this, place both AirPods in the case and then open the lid. Press the setup button on the back of the case for 15 seconds until the status light flashes amber than white.

You'll then need to reconnect your AirPods. Open the lid and then place then near your iOS device and follow the on-screen instructions to once again set up your wireless earbuds with your device.
